Community

The history of Islam in South Australia goes back to the Afghans who landed with their camels at Port Augusta in 1866. The first mosque Maree was built in Renmark in 1861. The second oldest mosque, built in 1889, which is now known as a national monument, is the Adelaide mosque in Little Gilbert Street. According to the most recent survey the current population of Muslims in South Australia is around 15,000. The number of mosques in South Australia has increased over the years and now the Muslims enjoy the availability of more than six mosques around South Australia.
