The Arabic Language program in the Islamic College is based on the SACSA framework for South Australia. It is designed to teach students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds to communicate effectively in Arabic and to understand the language and its culture. The program contributes significantly to the stated objectives of the Islamic College which aim to facilitate and enhance students' appreciation of the teachings of the Holy Quran.
In Years Reception, One and Two we focus on developing basic literacy and numeracy skills in Arabic. Our students learn to listen, speak and respond to spoken texts through various activities, such as:
- identifying and classifying information using visual clues
- responding to greetings, questions and requests
- engaging in conversation
- contributing to structured classroom activities
We develop our students' reading and writing skills through a variety of tasks, such as using patterns of stress and rhythm and moving from tracing and copying to self-constructed writing. The different levels of competence in Arabic are addressed through specifically-tailored programs for individual students and small groups.
