SOSE encourages students to think critically about current events confronting them and their world. By exploring diverse perspectives in relation to the past, places, cultures and societies, students learn ways in which they can be involved in topical issues. In Years 7 to 10 students develop a knowledge, understanding and appreciation of:

  • societies (locally, nationally, globally) over time
  • how our activities shape the environment we live in
  • cultural diversity and cohesion
  • the law in Australia and political systems throughout the world
  • how they can play an active part in their immediate and wider community
  • inequality and the distribution of wealth in society

They will develop the ability to:

  • interpret, analyse and evaluate primary and secondary sources
  • effectively interpret maps
  • work cooperatively with others
  • recognise prejudice and respect diverse perspectives
  • envisage possible and preferred futures

SOSE is informed by such subjects as History, Geography, Social Studies, Economics, Politics, Legal Studies, Environmental Education, Aboriginal Studies and Asian Studies.
