Tournament of Minds

Tournament of Minds

At the Islamic College we believe that students have the right to enjoy facing challenges that stretch them beyond their comfort zone. We also want their achievements to be recognised by the wider community.

Tournament of Minds is Australia's National Problem-Solving program for both Primary and Secondary Schools. Initially formed as an extension program for gifted and talented students, it now involves tens of thousands of everyday students and teachers (facilitators) in teams of seven at both State and Australian championship level.

Tournament of Minds challenges students to solve real-life problems in teams involving students from a variety of year levels. The children have six weeks to write and perform a problem-solving play to a given problem in the categories of

  • Maths and Engineering
  • English and Literature
  • Social Sciences

On the tournament day held at Flinders University, students are also asked to work together to solve a Spontaneous Problem. They have 5 minutes to do this and report back to specialist judges.

The Islamic College enters a team (or sometimes two) each year. Our team also performs their play at school assembly with as little help as possible from outside sources.
