At the Islamic College, we follow the First Steps curriculum and SACSA Frameworks. Our English curriculum for Years 3 to 6 contains three main strands:

  • Reading and viewing
  • Listening and speaking
  • Writing

By learning the structure of language students are able to interpret and understand the world around them by communicating with others. As part of their English studies students learn to differentiate between the diverse purposes of written and oral language. Good English skills are required and practised in all curriculum areas.

We also offer a wide range of co-curricular activities for students to demonstrate their language skills. Some of these include:

  • The Mayoral Make-a-Book Competition
  • Bookweek excursions and activities
  • Author visits
  • Premier's Reading Challenge
  • PM Benchmark testing
  • University of New South Wales, Australasian Schools Competition, for English
  • Western Australian Literacy and Numeracy Assessment in both Years 3 and 5

These activities ensure that our students have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
