English as a Second Language ![]()
At the Islamic College of South Australia we offer support for students from Non-English-Speaking Backgrounds (NESB) from Reception classes onwards. Assistance is given to make sure that our students learn communicative as well as formal academic language skills and develop appropriate study skills.
In Years 3 to 6, the E.S.L. curriculum focuses on the four strands of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Thematic units provide a structure within which students can increase their vocabulary and are exposed to the conventions of different genres.
Contextualised activities support the acquisition of reading and writing skills with a greater emphasis on grammar than in the early years. Activities are structured in such a way that essential learning is covered prior to students being required to undertake independent study.
